Earlier this year, Candace Cameron Bure (of Full House and Hallmark Channel fame) left Hallmark Channel after starring in films in her 30’s. He announced he would be moving to a new channel, the Great American Family Network, to focus more on faith-based projects. When asked about the inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ story network in an interview this week, he explained that “The Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at its core.”

    Homeschooling Requirements in North Carolina

Although North Carolina does not strictly regulate homeschooling, there are some homeschooling requirements in North Carolina that you must follow when homeschooling:

    • Start homeschooling at age 7.
    • Submit the required Letter of Intent to the Department of Non-Government Education to indicate the initial opening of your home education. Please note that you do not need to resubmit the letter of intent annually even if you add another child (simply update the application annually).
    • Provide classes “on a regular basis for at least nine calendar months of the year, excluding public holidays and vacations” (180 days recommended).
    • Provide at least five hours of instruction per school day that is “at least equivalent in quality, scope and duration to local mainstream schools” (recommended but not required).
    • Conduct a nationally standardized test for each child each year.
    • Notify the Department of Nonpublic Education when homeschooling is no longer operational by calling the DNPE office at (984) 236-0110 or filing the Homeschooling Updates and Changes .
    • Stay current on homeschooling laws and requirements.

How can I legally drop out of school?

Homeschooling is legal in every state in the United States. Because unschooling is considered a form of homeschooling, you can legally unschool in any state. However, homeschooling requirements and laws vary by state. So be sure to check your state’s laws.

Off-school registration depends on state home schooling laws. Some areas require homeschoolers to register with the state, so follow state guidelines for registration and homeschooling requirements. (You don’t have to call it “unschooling.”) You can then adapt your state’s requirements to an unschooling schedule.
