What is the longest jail time?

Table of Content

Clarence Aaron was a 23-year-old college student from Mobile, Alabama, with no criminal record. In 1992, he introduced a classmate whose brother was a drug dealer to a cocaine dealer he knew from high school. He later witnessed the sale of nine kilograms of cocaine and the smuggler paid him $1,500. After police arrested the group, the others testified against Aaron, describing him as a big dealer, leading to his being sentenced to three life terms in prison.

Unfortunately, in an age of strict foreclosure laws, stories like Aaron’s are all too familiar. The injustice against Aaron was eventually recognized, and in 2013, after 20 years in prison, he became one of the few federal prisoners to receive a commuted sentence from President Obama. Cases like yours have spurred criminal justice reform in recent years, with key presidential candidates from both parties calling for a significant reduction in our prison population, given an incarceration rate in the US five to ten times that of other developed nations. There has been a growing consensus around the notion that the “war on drugs” has relied too much on excessive punishment and that treatment interventions for drug addicts are more effective and compassionate than long-term incarceration.

Allan Wayne McLaurin: 21,250 years old

McLaurin was an accomplice of Darron Bennalford Anderson who received “the largest prison sentence awarded as a result of an appeal.” Anderson, also from Oklahoma, was convicted in 1994 of crimes ranging from raping an elderly woman to theft, robbery and kidnapping and was originally sentenced to 2,200 years.

He appealed, won a new trial, and was convicted again, only this time the jury sentenced Anderson to 11,250 years and added 6,300 to his sentence. He appealed again in 1997 and received a parole date of 12,744.

McLaurin’s original sentence of 21,250 years was reduced by 500 years on appeal.
